Handcuffing is an integral skillset to police officers in the lawful performance of their duties. The use of these temporary mechanical restraints is one of the most common areas of litigation in the criminal justice arena. Although restrained, the violator does not cease to be a threat or a responsibility. Safety of the violator should be ensured within the limits of correct officer safety practice. This course will identify commonly employed principles and techniques for handcuffing that could be used with a compliant subject that maintains safety for both the officer and subject while remaining versatile enough to transition to other options should the suspect begin to resist arrest.
